Why DA?

1. We believe in helping students to become moral, happy and productive people.

2. We’re just the right size. The Lower School student-to-teacher ratio is 9:1.  In the Middle and Upper Schools, the average class size is 14 students.

3. We have a talented, committed faculty with an average of 20 years experience.

4. We’re a diverse community, with 29.3% students of color.

5. We have a rich liberal arts curriculum. All of our students experience music, art, drama, science, and foreign language.

6. We’re a caring community. Students take part in community service, and character education is part of Durham Academy's formalized program.

7. Academic rigor and nurturing go hand-in-hand.  The Wall Street Journal called us one of the "most successful high schools in America." Small class sizes, caring teachers and an advisory program provide individual students what they need to succeed.

8. Athletic and leadership opportunities abound. 78% of students in grades 7-12 are on at least one athletic team.  Roles in student government, clubs and drama productions are more accessible in our small community.

9. We welcome parent involvement.  There are many ways for parents to become involved in the life of the school.

10. We’re accessible to families of various economic backgrounds. We offer more than $1,800,000 of financial aid.

11. After-school and summer programs keep our kids engaged.  Our extended-day program allows children to be cared for at school until 5 or 6 p.m.  Summer opportunities include academic, enrichment and athletic camps.
