Web of Wings: Ants Or Termites In Sight?

Termites cause an estimated $5-billion in damage to US properties each year. They primarily feed on wood, but also damage paper, books, insulation, and even swimming pool liners and filtration systems. Besides the monetary impact, thousands of winged termites emerging inside one’s home are an emotionally trying experience — not to mention the thought of termites silently feasting on one’s largest investment.

If you find a pile of what appears to be insect wings in a section of your home, you more than likely have a termite infestation. Termites are sometimes mistaken for flying ants -- but unlike flying ants, they will shed their wings once they have settled on a new place to colonize. Piles of long insect wings or dead insect bodies with wings found in or around your home warrants a professional inspection. (Termites can be differentiated from flying ants, which have constricted waists, elbowed antennae and fore-wings that are longer than the hind wings. Termites have uniform waists, straight antennae and four wings of equal size.)

Softening wood is another sign that you may have termites. If you start to see dips, cracks or crevices in or around your home it could be the result of a termite colony. Wood that begins to flake, fall apart or turn to dust should be further investigated by a termite professional. Also, tap on your wood; if it sounds hollow, check with a knife or screwdriver to see if it’s being eaten on the inside.
